Calculating Cycling Power Output

Harjinder here. Since this is a notice board for our club, here goes:

1. My "cycling" weight is ~94kg (don't larf)
2. My bike weighs ~10kg
3. The height of the HHC011 hill climb is ~65m (from the fab map site: www.bikehike.co.uk)
4. It took me 173 seconds to climb it

Therefore, my average power output during the climb (P) was:

P = mgh / t = [(94+10) x 9.8 x 65] / 173 = 382 W

Now, turning this round, the time for the climb, t, is given by:

t = mgh / P

If I was to lose 5 kg (not unrealistic if it wasn't for Christmas, pudding, cake, mince pies, er...self control, etc) while keeping the same power output, then:

t = [(89+10) x 9.8 x 65] / 382 = 165 s

that is, a saving of 8 s.

Conclusion: Pah! Losing 5kg would only save me ~8 s. So, stuff it, I'm gonna enjoy my food over Christmas! Or to look at it another way, I could put on 1kg, buy a bike that is 1kg lighter, and have a heart attack on the climb next year to get the same time.... hmmm.... Take a look at the guy below and compare with Mr Grimes above. Now, who looks happier, eh?

Hill Climb 7th Nov. 2009

Burnham Beeches were looking their golden best as I rode out to Wooburn Green to time the annual anti gravity event. In deference to the 'Credit Crunch' and as no bail out had been forthcoming from government,the usual double hill climb had been downgraded to a single event this year up Windsor Hill.
After some deliberation as to where to start should be, the appearance of High Wycombe CC members who had ridden the hill before confirmed that we were in the wrong spot. However all was soon ready as Anona prepared to time them off after allowing a generous 15 minutes for the Chief Timekeeper (Alan) to get to the top and prepare himself for the onslaught.
He had in fact reached the top of the hill in about five minutes and thus expected the riders to do the same in about three minutes.
With no thought for the natural beauty that was to be seen on the way up the High Wycombe riders rocketed up the hill followed in varying states of fitness by Road Club riders.
FULL RESULT
Robert Cable 4.18.05 (SBRC)
Kevin Holloway 2.01.00 (HWCC)
Joe Holloway 1.56.02 (HWCC)
Tony Pell 3.34.30 (SBRC)
Geoff Powell 2.14.80 (HWCC)
Harjinder Obhi 2.52.90 (SBRC)

That was enough althletism for one day so a halt was called and we repaired to Bourne End Garden centre for sustenance.

Mudguards and Upcoming Events

MUDGUARDS

I've just seen these swanky new Crud Roadracer mudguards (yes, that bike is lovely too). They seem to be a great new British design. I've never really liked that "streaky backside" look, so I'm definitely going to try a pair. More pictures and details including a fitting guide on Crud's website here.
